What are the most influential architectural styles in history?
Throughout history, several architectural styles have significantly influenced the built environment. Classical architecture, originating in ancient Greece and Rome, established principles of order, symmetry, and proportion that are still referenced today. Gothic architecture, with its pointed arches and elaborate ornamentation, dominated the Middle Ages and led to incredible structures like the Notre Dame Cathedral. The Renaissance brought a revival of classical ideas with added emphasis on harmony and the humanist philosophy. Modernism, emerging in the late 19th century, stripped away ornamentation in favour of function and simplicity, leading to the sleek, efficient designs we see in contemporary skyscrapers and homes. Each of these styles has contributed to the diverse architectural landscape we enjoy today, reflecting cultural, technological, and societal shifts.
